Around 4 years ago, I walked the streets of Bucharest with some work colleagues handing out warm clothes and boots to homeless people. What struck me was how most of the people we met were just regular , good people who had, somehow, fallen off societies ladder. The stories were humbling and a reminder of just how fragile our lives can be. When you see one of these good people searching for food in a public trash can, it really pulls at your heart knowing that is someone’s father, son brother, mother, daughter or sister. I do hope that my small gesture makes a difference and that many others will join me in helping these people back onto that societies ladder sometime soon.

In 1997, Casa Ioana opened the country’s first night shelter, for people who had lost their homes, following a request by the Mayor of Bucharest. Since 2000 however, we have focused our attention on providing temporary accommodation and professional psychosocial support to women and children experiencing domestic violence and family homelessness.
New Beginning
Our ‘New Beginning’ project aims to empower survivors of domestic abuse by ensuring that they have the tools they need to leave an abusive relationship and to move on with their lives.
